— When this makes sense

Factory production is for operators who can plan a run.

Buying from depot stock gets you containers this week. Factory production gets you exactly the containers you want — your color, your doors, your branding — across a quantity, at wholesale pricing direct from the line. The trade is time and minimum order. Real numbers on both, told before any deposit.

Fleet expansion

Adding 20 to 200 units in your fleet colors and branding. Paint goes on at the line, not in a yard.

Spec consistency

Same door style, same vent count, same insulation R-value across every unit. Standardize the spec sheet, repeat the order.

Specialty configurations

Double doors, open sides, hard-top open tops, windows, personnel doors, insulated builds, HVAC-ready electrical. Specced at order, not retrofitted after.

Survey and certification

IICL survey at the factory. CSC plate issued at production. ISO 6346 number under OWLU® or your prefix. Compliant out of the gate.

— Customization

Every spec, told to the factory before they cut steel.

Container factories work from spec sheets. The wider the spec, the more options on the table. Here’s what we’ll spec in a typical wholesale build for an operator.

01
Exterior paint

Any RAL Classic code. Single-color builds, two-tone, contrasted door panels. Paint goes on at the line — durable, factory-finished, not a yard respray.

02
Doors

Standard cargo doors, double-door (both ends), side doors, personnel doors, lockboxes, custom hardware. Hinges, gaskets, and lock rods to spec.

03
Windows

Fixed or sliding. Single-glazed or double-glazed. Tempered safety glass. Positioned by spec — sidewall, front wall, in personnel doors.

04
Vents

Passive louvered vents, powered exhaust, condensation vents, hooded vents. Count and position to spec depending on your end use.

05
Insulation

Wall, ceiling, and floor insulation at varying R-values. Closed-cell spray foam or rigid panel, factory-installed, with interior liner if specified.

06
Electrical & HVAC

Pre-wired outlets, LED lighting, distribution panels, GFCI circuits, HVAC-ready penetrations, mini-split A/C, generator-ready terminations.

07
Branding

Side-panel stencils, end-panel logos, fleet numbering, color-blocking, your BIC prefix or OWLU®. All applied at the factory.

08
Floor & interior

Hardwood, bamboo, or steel floors. Plywood lining, FRP, or open steel walls. Anti-slip coatings. E-track tie-downs and dunnage strips.

09
Plating & survey

ISO 6346 plate with owner prefix and check digit. CSC Safety Approval plate. IICL pre-shipment survey at the factory. Compliant from day one.

— How it works

From spec sheet to your depot, in five stages.

  1. 01
    Send your spec sheet

Quantity, size, type, customization list. If you don’t have a spec sheet template, we provide one — operator-grade, no fluff. Phone or email works.

  2. 02
    Factory match

We map your spec to a factory partner who can build it — capacity, lead time, MOQ, surveyor. Different specs run on different lines. We tell you which line, why, and what trade-offs exist.

  3. 03
    Production schedule confirmed at deposit

Wholesale pricing, lead time in weeks, MOQ for your spec, container number range, surveyor and CSC vendor — all in writing before deposit. No surprises after the wire clears.

  4. 04
    Production milestones

Steel cut, panels assembled, paint applied, doors fitted, interior finished, plates installed, IICL surveyed. Status updates at each milestone if you want them.

  5. 05
Shipment to your depot or direct

Loaded for ocean transit, vessel booked, U.S. port arrival, depot drop or direct delivery to your site. Documents, container numbers, BIC verification, CSC plate — all handed off at release.

— Before deposit

What we tell you, in writing, before any money moves.

Factory production has more variables than depot stock. We commit to surfacing every one of them up-front. If something changes mid-build (rare, but it happens), you hear about it before you hear about it from the depot.

Wholesale unit pricing

For the exact spec, exact quantity, exact factory.

Lead time in weeks

Production + ocean transit + depot or site delivery.

MOQ for your spec

Some custom builds require minimums. We tell you the floor.

Container number range

The block of OWLU® or your-prefix numbers we’ll assign.

Production QC & technical acceptance

We hire Unicon BV to inspect the production process at the factory and sign off on technical acceptance and quality control before the unit ships.

Production schedule

Steel-cut date, paint date, survey date, ship date. Real calendar.

— Branding & BIC code

Three branding paths.

BIC code is the four-letter owner prefix stenciled on every container. It’s issued by the Bureau International des Containers in Paris. For a factory build, you have three branding choices.

A. Under OWLU®

Your build ships under our BIC prefix. Verifiable in the public registry, covered by our federally registered trademark. Fast — no BIC application wait.

B. Under your prefix

You hold (or will register) your own BIC code. We coordinate with the factory to stencil your prefix at the line. Requires your BIC application cleared in advance.

C. Neutral / unstenciled

No prefix at the factory — you apply branding after the fact. Faster build, fewer compliance hurdles, but requires post-build paint or vinyl. Best for short-haul or domestic-only use.

— Common questions

What operators ask before a factory build.

What’s the minimum order quantity?

It depends on the spec. Standard 20ʹ and 40ʹ GP units in stock colors run lower minimums. Custom paint, double doors, insulated builds, and side-door configurations have higher minimums because they require dedicated production slots. We tell you the floor for your exact spec before you deposit.

How long is the lead time?

Factory production is measured in weeks, not days — and varies by factory backlog, ocean transit windows from Asia, and U.S. port congestion. We give you a real lead time in writing before you deposit. If a factory slot opens up sooner, we’ll tell you. Current factory and depot conditions are on the lead times page.

Can I see a sample before ordering?

For paint colors, the RAL Classic chart is the standard reference — every container factory paints to RAL. For door/window/vent configurations, we can send factory specs and photos from prior similar builds. For unusual specs, a sample unit is sometimes possible at additional cost.

Do you handle import paperwork and customs?

Yes for builds shipping under OWLU® — we are the importer of record and handle entry, duties, and depot delivery. For builds under your own BIC prefix where you act as importer, we coordinate with your customs broker but the entry is yours.

What’s the warranty?

Factory builds come with the factory’s structural warranty — typically against manufacturing defects in steel, welds, paint adhesion, and floor lamination. Terms vary by factory and we surface them with the production schedule. Survey grade (IICL) is a separate guarantee of condition at handoff.

Can I cancel after deposit?

Once steel is cut to your spec, cancellation costs are real and we’ll surface them in writing. Before steel-cut, deposit may be partially recoverable depending on factory milestone. We don’t take deposits we haven’t earned the right to keep.

— How we like to work

A spec sheet starts a conversation.

Custom builds have variables that don’t fit a form — factory selection, lead time vs MOQ trade-offs, branding compliance, surveyor selection. We’ll work through them in one conversation. Email works for the same thing — same inbox, same response time — just slower.
