- 40-foot GP has the same footprint as 40-foot HC — only one foot of external height differs (8ʹ6″ vs 9ʹ6″). Most modern factory production runs 45G1 HC; 42G1 GP is available but less common.

Why is 40ʹ HC more common than 40ʹ GP?
The extra foot of interior height is essentially free at the factory — same footprint, same handling. Most operators specify HC by default. GP makes sense where overhead clearance, regional fleet conventions, or rail loading impose the 8ʹ6″ constraint.
